San Antonio Art League & Museum, 130 King Williams Street, San Antonio, Texas
SAAL&M is the oldest arts organization in San Antonio. It is located in the beautiful and historic King William district. I am honored to have #27 Cobalt Tidings selected to be included in the 91st Annual Juried Exhibition.
#27 Cobalt Tidings
This one-of-a-kind collectable art piece was inspired by the Japanese art of Kintsugi, the captivating beauty of the ocean and the power of the tides. It contemplates both the fragility and power of nature.
Dimensions: 4.5 x 2 in

#27 Cobalt Tidings

The rich intensity of the cobalt blue color on the interior of the shell is contrasted with the soft seafoam green of the exterior. The vibrant gold calls attention to the graceful spiral of the shell’s interior structure that gives it strength and form. Once a home to a living sea creature, this Whelk seashell was long ago abandoned and tossed on the ocean floor. The sharply broken sides and loss of shine, indicate that this shell was worn down over an extended period of time. Shells, composed mostly of calcium carbonate, are surprisingly strong, yet under the right circumstances, can be fragile, too.
With this whelk seashell I hope to highlight the power of nature through the strong cobalt blue color and the strength of the shell fragment, that appears fragile, yet is still quite strong. The broken nature of the shell reveals a power stronger than itself, yet it has endured, revealing the beauty within, and becoming a beautiful transformed piece of art.
